The Kinabalu Golf Club or KGC is regarded as one of the oldest Clubs in Sabah. It was established several years before the 2nd World War by European employees of the British Chartered Company and the European business establishments in the then British North Borneo. 

The following is a brief chronological history of the Club:

  • On 16th March 1933, the Club was established under the name of Jesselton Golf Club with 50 members comprising  mainly of European of British Origin.  
    The Clubhouse was housed on top of a hill at Batu Tiga (the present site of the secretariat / Land & Surveys Dept );
  • During the 2nd World War the Japanese invasion put a total stop to the golf activities of the Club. It was only on 23rd September 1948 that the Club activities was revived again.
  • In 1954, the Club ceased its activities at the original site and shifted to Tanjung Aru, near the Tanjung Aru Beach. A new 9-hole golf course was built together with an "atap" bungalow Clubhouse near the beachfront ;
  • On 29th May 1962, the Clubhouse was razed by fire. The building, furniture and fixtures, Club records, trophies, etc were completely destroyed.
  • In 1963, a new Clubhouse was built and the name of the Club was changed to The Kinabalu Golf Club.

The Kinabalu Golf Club or KGC is located at about half a kilometer along Jalan Aru, near the Tanjung Aru 1st Beach. The golf course is adjacent to the Waikiki Condominium and the Casuarina Hotel. The Club is just a 5-minutes walk from/to the Shangrila Tanjung Aru Resort Hotel and is only 10 minutes drive to/from the Kota Kinabalu International Airport as well as to/from the City of Kota Kinabalu. The newly constructed Kota Kinabalu Terminal 1 airport is just a kilometer away from the Club.
The objectives of the Club are:

  1. To promote and carry on the game of golf under the Rules of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrew, Scotland and of the United States Golf Association;
  2. To provide and maintain a Golf Course and Clubhouse;
  3. To provide such other recreational and entertainment facilities and activities for its members.

Presently the Club has a maximum total membership of 1,800 members. The Club has the following classes of membership:
- Ordinary Members,
- Associate Members,
- Honorary Members,
- Honorary Life Members,
- Absent Members,
- Corporate Members,and
- Privileged Members

Ordinary members are referred to as subscribing members who are entitled to the use of all the Club's facilities and have the right to participate in the Management of the Club's affairs, to attend and to vote at General Meetings and to hold office in the Club. An Ordinary member pays a monthly subscription of RM50.00.

ClubhouseAssociate memberships are restricted to the registered spouse of an Ordinary Member and are entitled to the use of all the Club's facilities upon payment of the monthly subscription of RM10.00.

The operation of the Club revolves around a number of activities, Viz : Golf, Tennis, Swimming, Snooker, Slot-Machine, Karaoke, Sauna, Steambath, Squash and fitness centre (GYM). The Club members their spouses (Associate Members) and children 18 years and below are directly benefited from the use of these facilities.

KGC is affiliated to and has entered into reciprocal arrangements with the major golf clubs in Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore and one each in the Philippines, Hong Kong and Qatar.as follows:
